As contractors, we completely understand the personal satisfaction that comes from completing a home repair project all by yourself. It’s fun, and it can reveal some skills you never knew you had. However, there are some projects that you should always leave to the professionals, no matter how experienced you are at DIY’ing other repairs and upgrades. Not even if someone put up an “easy” Youtube instructional video. And especially not if your friend’s brother has some applicable fix-it tips he learned while living in a Frat house. We’ve made a list of the top 5 repairs you should never handle on your own, and give you a quick breakdown of exactly why.

1. Removing Asbestos

Back in the day, asbestos was a common material used in home construction. Its great insulation properties made it highly popular – until it was discovered to be highly toxic. If you have an older home that still has asbestos, you’ll want to get a professional team to remove it. There are many laws in place to regulate the removal practices, all of which pros know like the back of their hand. If you try to DIY, you may end up poisoning yourself, or endangering your family, neighbors, and any others who are in close proximity to your home or wherever you dispose of the asbestos.

2. Repairing Gas Appliances

When your appliances run on gas, there is an inherent risk of leaks. If a break causes gas to leak, you and your family could become very ill, or even be killed. Trying to repair a gas appliance yourself can cause a gas leak, and even mending the leak itself can be unsuccessful if you aren’t properly trained. An insufficiently sealed leak can release gas at a slow but steady rate, insidiously poisoning anyone in or around the home.

3. Electrical Fixes

While it may not come as a shock that you shouldn’t do electrical fixes yourself (irresistible pun intended), many homeowners make the mistake of thinking it’s just a matter of arranging a few wires and switches. In reality, electrical problems are complex and dangerous. If you leave faulty wiring behind, you’ll have a fire waiting to happen. You can also suffer from serious electrical shock during the repair process. Electricians go through extensive training to pull off these types of jobs – leave it to them!

4. Plumbing Repairs

Much like electrical wiring, people often assume that plumbing is just connecting some pipes together and making sure there’s no water gushing out. But there is much more to it than that, and even the smallest – sometimes invisible – leaks can lead to major damages. Dripping or even humidity buildup can cause mold, rot, and warping in your home. Don’t risk damaging the structure of your house, hire a professional plumber instead.

5. Installing New, or Repairing Old Roofing

The risk of falling is an obvious reason for not DIY’ing your roof, but tackling the job on your own can also cause damage to your home’s whole structure. These damages can be immediate, or set in a while after you’ve wrapped things up. Additionally, a poorly-done roofing job can result in leaks, which will drive up your energy bills and cause a great deal of trouble during the rainy season.
